1. Running Digital Privacy's Product Installation CD (If downloaded, goto step 5.Setup)
To get started, you must first run the installation program for all of Digital-Privacy's products which is called setup.exe. If you have just downloaded Privacy.FILE from our website, please skip ahead to Running Privacy.FILE's Setup.exe, otherwise insert the Digital Privacy's Product CD-ROM disk in your CD-ROM drive and wait for the our main installation screen to automatically start.
Note: In some case, depending on the computers configuration, the setup.exe located on our CD will not automatically start. If this is the case for you, either start an Windows Explorer session and navigate to your CD-ROM drive, then double click on the setup.exe in the root directory, or from your start menu, select the Run option, then type in the drive and directory location, plus setup.exe and press enter.
The main product installation program will start and look as follows:

Digital Privacy recommends that you first click on the Documentation button to load and read the appropriate documentation related to the product(s) you are about to install so you are fully informed and knowledgeable about the product before you begin the installation.
Note: Please keep in mind that you are about to install security related products which will effect the way you use your workstation, mainly as in the case of Privacy.ACCESS. Therefore we recommend you fully understand what you are about to install and are prepared to take the time to configure and understand the products before hastily proceeding. For instance, with Privacy.ACCESS you will be required to enter a user name and password or insert a smart card and answer your customized question in order to obtain access to your workstation - pressing ESC on 95/98/ME to get to your desktop will no longer be available. |

2. Installing Smart Card Reader Support (If downloaded, goto step 5.Setup)
If you have a Smart Card or Cards supplied to you by Digital Privacy and a compatible PCSC Smart Card Reader, continue with step 2, if not skip to the step 3.
Select the first option "SmartCard Support" as shown on the product installation dialog above to install the appropriate smart card device drivers needed for your computer to properly communicate with your Smart Card Reader. Find the supported Smart Card Reader Manufacturer listed on the next panel, then carefully follow the Reader installation instruction supplied by the manufacturer of the reader to successfully install your reader drivers.
Important: Before returning to the first page and proceeding with the product installation, you must reboot your workstation so the driver can take effect. Make sure the installation has been successful to this point before continuing with the Privacy.FILE and/or Privacy.ACCESS product installation. If need be contact the smart card manufacturer's website for additional support or drivers, or contact Digital Privacy for additional help. If the smart card reader is not properly installed, then you will not be able to successfully install and/or configure the Digital Privacy products. |

3. Installing Digital Privacy's Security Products (If downloaded, goto step 5.Setup)
Once you have successfully installed you smart card reader and driver as outlined in step 2, or you are just installing the software only version of our products, proceed with selecting "Our Products" from the main installation panel of our security suite installation application. The following panel will display.
Note: You may proceed directly to either of the Privacy products and begin the installation. However we recommend you first install the Common Product Support before doing so. Why? For starters, all of Digital Privacy's products share a number of common components, which are installed with each product. However if you do just install the products and not install the common product support and at a later date wish to remove Digital Privacy's security products installed, these common components will remain on your system. To remove the common components, your will first need to have installed the common product support and then later uninstall the common components using the com product support un-installation option via your systems Add and Remove application.

Selecting any of Digital Privacy's security products will start the specific product's installation application. (setup.exe) First select and install the Common Product Support, then once installed, select and install Privacy.FILE and continue to the next section. |

4. Installing Common Product Support (If downloaded, goto step 5.Setup)
Select the Common Product Support button on the panel shown above. Read the license agreement information displayed on the first panel then (if you agree to the terms), press the Yes option to continue to the following setup panel.

Two options are available, the first option, Compact should be selected if no smart card reader is attached to your workstation. This mode is for the installation of Digital Privacy's software only versions of the security products.
Note: You can still attach a smart card reader to your workstation at a later time - Choose the option consistent to your current configuration.
The second option, Typical should be selected if you have a PCSC compatible smart card reader currently attached on your workstation and properly configured. Please refer to the previous section, Installing Smart Card Reader Support before continuing. Choosing this option will force the common components to confirm the smart card subsystem is working properly after the files are successfully copied to your workstation.

If the subsystem does not find a suitable driver at this point, you are now given another opportunity to install the appropriate driver by pressing the Install New Reader button. By installing a new reader driver you will be required to reboot your system before you can continue with the security product installations. If a suitable driver is found and determined as operational, insert your smart card to complete the smart card installation and press OK to continue. Notice the * No Smart Card * status change to Card Detected. No reboot of your workstation will be necessary in this case. |

6. Entering Serial Numbers
This Customer Information panel (above) is where you are required to supply your serial number, which is in one of the following forms: ####-####-RET-####-####, ####-####-OEM-####-####, or ####-####-TRL-####-####. Serial numbers consist of a combination of 19 numbers and letters in any location.
If you have not been supplied such a number, then either contact Digital Privacy or your customer representative for assistance. If you are evaluating the product or have downloaded the product for evaluation, type "EVAL" in this field to install a restricted version of the product.
Note: The evaluation version of Privacy.FILE has some key features that are restricted or will not be available. For instance, one 95/98/ME directory protection is not available in the evaluation version. The evaluation period is limited to 30 day, at which time all the encryption features become disabled.
* Known serial number issues or confusion:
A couple of issues to note when supplied a serial number. All serial number are issued with a matching product driver, which simply means that unless you have the exact driver of the product on the CD for which the serial number was issued, your serial number will not work.
Also serial number are issued per product as well. You can have one serial number issued for both Privacy.FILE and Privacy.ACCESS, if you are installing the same driver for each product and the serial number was generated appropriately. However in most case you will be given a separate serial number for each product, so you will need to distinguish which number is for which product.
What is important to note here is, you need to know what driver you have if you need a serial number from Digital Privacy. In the case of CD's, the build driver should be present on the CD, or as the volume label of the CD when inserted into a CD-ROM drive. If you download the driver from our website, make note of the build number specified next to the downloadable file, such as: 01.0815.0009
Note: In some situations on some computers, it has been determined that even a valid serial number will not enable the Next button - allowing you to continue, so if you are certain that you have a valid serial number that matches your product and driver version, please contact Digital Privacy's Technical Support or sales representative immediately for an solution.
Serial numbers are case insensitive but are required to be entered with the dash separators. If you downloaded the product from our website, you were emailed a password to unzip the file and extract the setup files. Do not use this unzip password as your serial number for installing the product, it is only given to you to extract the contents of the download file and only after completing the evaluation submission form supplied on the download page below the actual downloadable files. |

7. Setup Type
This panel is important - do not breeze over it and except the defaults unless you are sure of your choice. There are three options, Compact, Custom and Typical, which translate to Software only version, You choose which options and Smart Card supported version. The first and last options are straight forward and when selected install all the Privacy.FILE components, including the fully administration utilities. Choose the Compact option if you do not have a smart card reader installed on your computer, otherwise choose the Typical option to ensure the smart card subsystem is properly installed and configured. If you are an advanced user, select the Custom option and continue.
NOTE: If you are using the product as an evaluation copy, you will not see the next screen. You will not have the option to choose which type of install you want and will instead install the compact version.

If you do not have a PCSC compatible smart card reader present at the time of your installation, choose the compact option at this time, later when you attach a smart card reader, run the installation software again and choose the Modify option. The panel shown above will be presented once again given you the option to now select the other options. A reboot of your system will be required.
Compact is for machines not having Smart Card support.
Custom allows the user to choose which options to install. These options include Administration Files, Help Files, and Smart Card Support.
Typical is for machines using Smart Card support.
NOTE: Once the PF install is complete, you will be asked to install the Smart Card drivers (if not already installed). Please refer to the Smart Card manufacturer instructions for more help on installing the drivers. |

8. Custom Install
For the advanced user, selecting the custom option provides the means to determine what is installed on the workstation. The default configuration is setup equivalent to the Compact install option shown above. To include smart card support (Typical Install shown above), check the Smart Card Support checkbox. You can also deselect the other options at this point to not install a component.

Deselecting the Administration Files options will not copy the Privacy.FILE administration Utility to the workstation. This would be the desired action when installing Privacy.FILE to a restricted users workstation. To configure the user workstation, you then need to be able to access the application via a network connection. |

When using Privacy.FILE, use should always backup you key database to another storage media to ensure you can always recover your keys in case of an emergency - failing to do so could prevent you from ever retrieving your encrypted data in the case of a lost or stolen smart card.
